Trabuco Hills High School Bingo is GREAT!

I have been to Trabuco Hills High School bingo a few times including the opening night. It has come right along with being a great place to play! The staff is very friendly, the games are good ones. Feels like home, especially for those who miss the Thursdays at El Toro High School. They play a few of the extra tab games, not an overwhelming amount. The serve you (right at your table!) lemonade, water, pretzels and popcorn. Some of the moms make a great dessert that they sell for 50 cents a slice and they are delicious. Come on out and join in the fun. They have a lotto where you pick 5 numbers from said row and also have a bonus ball to win on. My good friend, Donna Awerkamp, passed away yesterday morning from cancer. We all will miss her. She played in the Library at Irvine Middle School. Services are Sunday. Our hearts and thoughts are with Big Ron and his family. We love you Donna!

Hello Everyone,

I haven't written in a while, my apologies. I have been playing bingo though!

Much sadness about Jean from the Elks Lodge in Mission Viejo passing away. She will be missed. She was a very nice person. My heart goes out to you, Newt. Take care.

By the way, the Elks in Mission Viejo is having a marathon soon. Check their site for more details.

I hit Laughlin this weekend. I pulled into bingo before going to my hotel. The River Palms has a nice room. I won 3 times! I played there the last game before going home and hit the bonus ball. Had to split it 4 ways but I can say I won it! I must have played a total of 8 times and each time someone hit the bonus ball. And I do mean every time! It takes weeks at most places. It was a good (and hot) weekend.

Checking out places to play

I have been trying to check out new places to play. Of course, locally around Orange County. So far I have tried Monday night at the Elks in Santa Ana. It is a nice bingo, quiet and relaxed. Not so many pull tab games as to take all your money! The crowd is friendly and the workers nice. Good food. They give away $20's at the half-time drawing. They play early and main games but there are many main games. You get out around 10:30pm.

Then on Thursday I tried the Temple Beth Shalom. Small bingo, quiet place. There are only early and main games. The usual pull tab games are played and half time prizes are mainly a dauber and a free double action game. You get out around 10pm.

Friday I played 40 Martyrs in Santa Ana. For $50 you get three of every game played! Greatest bargain around. They have early, main, half-time, main and late games as well as bonanza and a very late quick game. Half-time prizes are decent. Staff is very nice and the food is great. Watch out as they play a lot of pull-tab games! Keep track of your funds so you can get some of each.

Saturday I play at Irvine Middle School. I still like my spot in the library. They are having a marathon bingo on Sunday, August 30. Doors open at 3pm. It is a very well run bingo with early early games, early, main and late games. Half-time drawings are for pull-tabs and cash up to $50.

I do play occassionally at the Elks Lodge in Mission Viejo on Wednesdays. Only early and main games, no give-aways other than an internet coupon for a free bonanza or early game. Nice staff and very inexpensive good food.

Now to do a Tuesday and Sunday game. Wow, it is Tuesday, right? See ya! Terry

Retired school secretary charged

El Toro High parents say $183,000 meant to support sports teams went missing.

A former secretary at El Toro High has been charged with stealing more than $150,000 that had been collected through in athletics fees, donations and parents' and students' fund-raising efforts.

According to a felony complaint filed by the District Attorney, Carlotta McCarthy, 56, of Mission Viejo, took money from the El Toro High athletic boosters while working as a secretary in the athletics department. She faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

School officials hope the charges will speed up the district's insurance claim, which is necessary for reimbursing the parent groups.

McCarthy declined to comment Wednesday.

"She's not guilty," said Chad Lewin, McCarthy's attorney. "That's it. She's not guilty." He declined to comment further.

McCarthy is free on $50,000 bail, said Farrah Emami of the Orange County District Attorney's Office. An arraignment will take place in coming weeks.

McCarthy was the secretary of the athletics department at El Toro High, and the custodian of an account used by about 20 booster clubs. When she retired during the 2005-06 school year, the figures she had kept didn't add up, said Deputy District Attorney Douglas Brannan.

Saddleback Valley Unified hired a fraud examiner, who determined approximately $183,000 was missing from the account.

The boosters' account had been audited, said Frank Manzo, business services director for SVUSD.

"But the degree to which the audit has taken place, the thoroughness, the accuracy, all the information – perhaps it was manipulated, and that's difficult to say," he said. "If you put yourself in a criminal mind-set, if you want to misrepresent something, you would."

The boosters didn't carry insurance, but Manzo said the district's insurance should cover the missing funds.

"Since the clubs entrusted that money to the district, essentially we were operating on the club's behalf," he said. "Now that an arrest has been made … it shows we had a valid claim and will hopefully help move this along through the claims process."

He said he didn't know whether any of the stolen money could we recovered.

The aquatics boosters sued SVUSD in April for the $48,000 the group says it lost. SVUSD is expected to file a response this month.

A number of groups have raised fees and expanded fund-raising efforts to try replace the funds. Aquatics boosters' fees were up about $75 per student, to $375. Football boosters held a casino night, and sold pizza from a booth during concerts at Verizon Amphitheater.

"There should always be a check and balance, and this is what happens when you don't have a check and balance," said Cindy Rachman, a mother with kids in the wrestling, football, lacrosse and golf programs.

New Players are funny...

OK, haven't said anything for a while, had a lot on my mind and plate these last few months.

I played at Irvine Bingo on Saturday night. New players are funny! A new couple sat across from me. Then we play the jamboree patterns, you know, a line, six pack, corner stamp, or in and out corners on 6 cards. The man asks, "Can the stamp be anywhere?"

"No," I say, "Only in the corner."

A few seconds later, "I got a stamp with the free space, should I cover it?"

"No," I say, "Only in the corner."

Again, he asks, "The stamp has to be in the corner?"

I say, "Hence the name Corner Stamp."

I think he got it that time. Hee Hee!

Haven't "blogged" for a while!

Hey All,

I guess you notice I haven't blogged for a while. Sorry about that. Have some medical issues in the family right now and it is hard to keep up with much else.

I went to bingo on Thursday at Fountain Valley High School. VERY nice bingo, and the people are friendly as well. I sure miss El Toro bingo and this place would do as a replacement on that night. I don't like the drive there. Coming from South County can be a pain, but only for the 5 miles from the airport to Brookhurst street. Once you get there you are home free.

OK, maybe I like it cuz I won! Or maybe cuz I see some folks from El Toro and it makes me feel like home. Whatever, I will be going there again.

They have no phone number to call, but it looks like their early games begin around 6:30. I got there just after the first game, left Lake Forest at 5:50 and got there at 6:30, but the walk to the room made me late. Oh yes, and the walk to the room could be marked better. I had to ask where it was as I saw no signs pointing the way! FVHS, you need to work on this.

Otherwise, whoo hoo!

What a win!

My mom is in town. She likes to play bingo with me when she is here so we went to Fountain Valley High School Bingo last night. Nice place, quiet. I found a few of my other friends there from El Toro Bingo. We played the bingo and pulled the pull-tabs. I found a $250 winner in the In-Laws fifty cent tab! Hooray.

Well, the win just pumped up my mom and since we were only 15 minutes away from Hawaiian Gardens and had an hour left to play there we hauled booty and went. They have a machine there you can play for $40 and it has 2 papers for the next 25 games. No stress, just watch your machine.

When we bought the machine, we hadn't found a place to sit. The game was on though. As we stood by a table looking for a seat the lady right next to us yells bingo! She heard the machine go off so mom wanted to see what a bingo on the machine was. I asked to see my mom's machine and SHE HAD A BINGO! Turns out that the machine the lady heard was not hers but my mom's machine!! My mom got the whole win, $250. Whoo hoo!

About 10 games later she won by herself again. She is flying high today. Last night was a great night at bingo. Made the 5 o'clock traffic to FV bingo worth it.

Getting Burned Out?

Maybe I am getting a bit burned out on Bingo. I won at Hawaiian Gardens. That was a good feeling. Went to Elks, Irvine, and then San Manuel. No wins. San Manuel Casino was relaxing. Right now, tho, if you asked me to, I would turn you down for bingo. Think I will take a break for a week or two. Refresh.

I like seeing my friends at bingo. That is why I mostly go. I like chatting with them. Hmmm.

Las Vegas Bingo - Blah

I went to Vegas on Monday. Blah. The bingo was boring there. The payouts were minimal and unless you win the cash ball you only got about $50 for the win. Mostly the low payouts were due to the number of winners you split with. If you got the first 5 numbers in the G row, you won...along with 5 or 6 other people. Forget it if your N balls are not one after another. The first 4 out wins multiple times. I got the O row bingo and won a whole $9. I have not seen a payout that low at any of the schools. Not worth the time and effort, much less the money. Indian Casinos pay much more than Vegas. It has really changed and seems they only want as much of your money as they can get. Slots are down and they are not putting in Keno rooms anymore either. BLAH.

I am sticking with OC Bingo. At least if you split, you get over $100 most of the time. And with the different patterns played, you have a better chance of winning. No straight line bingos at the schools or Elks. Patterns also break up the monotony of the game.

San Manuel, Irvine Bingo, Elks Bingo, Hawaiian Gardens bingo...here I come!

Daub 4 Pull Tab Games

The pull-tab daub 4 games are getting big. You buy the pull-tab special game hoping to get a card that has 4 bingo numbers on it. Most places play the game separately, calling numbers until someone has "daubed all 4 numbers" and wins. These games are worth from $500 to $1449. (Just saw the $1449 last night).You win the whole amount even though they show 4 games on the same card. See, the card has the same numbers on all 4 games making the coverer the winner of the entire amount. Most games pay either $1000 or $1199, just under the reported amount for the IRS. Pretty sneaky, heh?

It seems like some folks have the luck. I have friends who have won several times on the $1199 games. Others get close every week, but no cigar. Also, they play these games between the regular games. Seems the night gets longer and longer. I have heard of places that play these games with the regular games so there is no delay.

What do you think? Do you like these games? Is the chance at $1000 worth the extra money and time spent? I am torn. It seems the more they are played, the more pull-tab games the places sell. My fav place has gone from selling 3 safari pull tab games to 6 now. At $10 worth each time it really adds up. And if you buy 20 of each game, you will be in the dog-house before you get home if you don't win!

At least it goes to charity...

Vegas fun coming up!

Whoo hoo, I am saving up my bingo funds for Vegas. Going the last week of this month and I will have some fun. Gold Coast is generous enough to give me a room for a couple nights and I will play and play!

My mom is meeting me there, she is from Arizona. She is so excited she may wet herself! LOL

Great time at Elks Marathon

Hey everyone,

What fun on Sunday at the Elks Marathon in Mission Viejo. Guess it is cause I won a game! It was a hardway line with a corner stamp. I thought it said no overlap, but when I showed my friend the pattern with overlap she said, "You got it! Is it on the next number or do you call it now?" Boy, thank goodness I showed her, I had it on the next number and all by myself! Too funny, there was a bonus and pull tabs in it for her!

Tonight, playing bingo, I hear a gal that is brand new to bingo complaining that her numbers just didn't come up. It was her first time but she was complaining like the pros! It was very amusing. Guess she needs to get used to it. Just like the rest of us! LOL

I needed a G for the $1000 game. 4 different G's came up and someone else won...a new person at the hall! I complained good naturedly. But I wasn't as good as the brand new gal!

Busy Night for Elks Bingo in MV

Wow, Wednesday was a busy night for the Elks Lodge in Mission Viejo. They had a fun crowd, pumped up by the closing of El Toro Bingo. Will Irvine Bingo be crowded on Saturday? Irvine has some nice half-time giveaways so good luck in the drawings!

El Toro is closed...for now

Well, El Toro Bingo is closed for now. The story is that the rooms where we play are being remodeled. When it is done the rooms will be chopped up into smaller rooms so there is no room for bingo. The gym is always booked so that is out. If there is a place you know of in Lake Forest that will support about 150 people playing and the equipment, let them know. The website is http://ethsbingo.late4bingo.com and the email is ethsbingo@late4bingo.com. If they find an alternative place, the can continue the tradition.

ETHS bingo has been around 14 years! I am so sad to see them go. It is my favorite bingo, the workers are so nice and the people that play are very fun. I will miss it. I went out with a bang tho, hit a win on a pulltab AND got to say bingo! Whoo hoo.

Well, guess I will frequent Irvine Bingo and/or Elks Bingo in Mission Viejo more often. See you there!

El Toro Bingo Closing???

I just got the word that El Toro Bingo in Lake Forest, CA at the El Toro High School is closing. I hear the school is remodeling so they have to close it. Thursday, April 6, 2006 is their last night. Guess I will skip school and attend. Boy will I miss it! I have been going for well over 10 years and I know folks there that have come since the opening!

I haven't heard if it will reopen after the remodeling. I sure hope that is the plan. I will let you know more on Friday.

Bingo win? I wish

Well, I played Wednesday at the Elks, MV, then Saturday at Irvine and finally Sunday at San Manuel Indian Casino. Did I win at bingo? NO

I did win at the slots on Sunday tho. Made up for the losing the other days. So close at bingo there, was on for the power number G57. Of course, someone won on G47. Wonder why that happens a lot? I needed an O65 to win and someone won on O66. Just luck of the balls.

Oh well, I will try again later in the week. No worries!
